So tell everyone a little about Vicky E!

I’m from North Philly. I’m a recent graduate from American University. I currently work as a Paralegal and have put further school on hold to try to pursue my music. I’ve always loved to perform, and am going to put more effort and time into my craft.

How old were you when you realized you could sing so beautifully?

Thank you! I was young, I just remember liking to sing because my mother always sang to me, around the house, at church all the time. Singing at church is really when I realized I had a gift.

What do you consider your style to be?

I would consider my style to be neo-soul, at least that’s what I’m aiming for, sometimes as an artist you have to work around what you really want in order to get yourself out there so I don’t want to get stuck in a genre, I just love to sing and write, however it sounds to the listeners is what it is I guess

How long have you been performing?

I’ve been performing my whole life. At school, talent events, church and the like.

Where can someone find you if they wanted to catch one of your performances?

Hit me on my facebook. I’m not a facebook crackhead or anything but I find that’s the best venue for networking these days. I’m trying to find a band to work with so I can get some gigs poppin. I really enjoy live performance, and am working hard to try to get things together so I can get back out there.

Can you remember your first show?

I actually don’t but what I do remember is being very young maybe four or five and being on a bus trip with my aunt’s church. I don’t remember what song I sang but I do remember that everyone was intently listening, and admiring , not just because I was young but I could tell that they were touched by my voice. I don’t think I’ll soon forget it.

Who have you worked with?

I haven’t really worked with too many people. I can’t wait to get something solid done with Dozi though, clearly one of the best producers in the city! I have worked with independent artists and producers throughout the years on different tracks though. “Me And You” and “Love Me” were produced by Battery a young producer from the A he’s up and coming, be on the look out for him.

What successful artist/s would make up your dream collaboration?

I’d wanna do a song with Lauryn and Stevie. They have been my favorite artists throughout my life and it would be a dream come true to work with them.

What do you think of the state of todays R&B? What do you think, if anything, can be done to add to today’s R&B?

Loaded question! R&B today I feel has lost it’s soul. The music of a generation is really a reflection of that generation. I feel that R&B and Hip-Hop these days reflects the millennial generation as sex crazy, money hungry, wannabe gangsters, and I know we have more to offer the world than that. I think that R&B needs to get back to the feeling of the music, I wanna feel like I felt the first time I heard All is Fair in Love by Stevie when I turn on the radio. As of right now I can’t even turn it on.

What are your goals in the music industry?

My goal is really to perform. Throughout my life people have begged me to go on reality shows and the like, but stardom is not at all what I’m looking for. I really want to reach the people I have something to say about love, life, and my experiences with both. I want my music to inspire and insight change, I want people to feel what I’m saying not just the beat behind the words. I don’t want to be a product of the industry, I jus wanna sang.

Indie label or Major label and why?

Indie most definitely because I don’t wanna change. A major label would be good for exposure but I feel I could be the artist I want to be on an Indie label with no strings attached.

What are you working now?

Right now I’ m just beginning again. Trying to finish school and find a job has taken up most of my time for the last few months but now I’m goin in. I’m trying to get my demo together. I’m looking for some musicians for this ballad. I recently wrote a song called “Resilience”, it’s a work in progress but I can’t wait ‘til everything is all together.

DY Magazine Launch

Congratulations to Damon Youmans for his magazine launch yesterday on the Ben Franklin Yacht. DY Magazine has spent it's first four issues online with great success. DamonYoumans.com is very interactive in giving insight to the arts. Not celebrity type of entertainment but Real Art. His 5th issue is now available to you at many bookstores like Borders and Barnes and Nobles.

The turnout was a great success as everyone who supports him showed so much love for him as he gave his presentation of DY Magazine in hard copy. Giving back pocket magazines a whole new face, DY Magazine is one to get if you're looking for organic art. Sorry guys, no big booty's splashed across the front cover. That's a different kind of art! Dy Magazine is for all to view read and enjoy. From young to not so young anymore, there's something for the entire family from cover to cover.

How are your doing?

How are you doing? When you look at your progress, how are you doing? When you take inventory of the cd's you sold (or not), how are you doing? When you tally up the money you spent on promo's and clothes does it make as much since as it did when you were spending the money? I've been on the solo promoting and making moves and I can't understand what the heck some people are really doing? How is it that I see fliers all over the place and you tubes of shows and half a million mixtapes of people that are charting nowhere?

I've taken time out to call and listen to the conference calls with big names and have noticed a pattern. Singers/rappers do a lot of complaining about the "DJ" not breaking new artists. I believe there's truth in that however, A lot of artists are missing a step. When the artists is asked how many spins are you getting they say HUH? And then the person would have to explain the question. Not to say that radio should be a goal but know that when you promote that your song(s) are being played on the radio in your hometown, tha's gonna be the first question asked. How Many Spins Are You Getting?

They say it's about the hustle more than talent but when you combine the two you have a nice package. As I was saying earlier, I've been doing all of my own promotions with the help of the few supporters I have (because I like genuine people) I've managed to get my name out there to the right people. It prefer to work smart rather than hard. I aint knocking the grind that the average person has cause I aint built like that. Runnin all over the world, fallin out NOT SLEEPING....that still troubles me. Now it's been spread that if you don't get sleep you're grinding real hard! That's dumb. Get sleep people. But as I was saying, I have silently and strategically made my way up the charts on Reverbnation and is holding fast within the top 20 artists in Philly!! I don't perform or nothing. I have produced a few songs that I feel really good about and so does the rest of the city!

Give Credit When It's Due

We all know who Nicki Minaj is by now, but how many of us are grateful that she came along? Before Nicki we had absolutely no one relevant to compare anything to. Yeah we had our Foxy’s and Lil Kim’s but how long ago was that?! Even Missy was on another level when it came to rapping. She had the lane all to herself. Not only did she help the female rap game but she was producing and put a vicious spin on videos. Now we have Miss Minaj. Yeah she’s out there and most of her body parts are “out there” but what did she really do? She created a reason for people to look for female rappers who can rap. Really rap!

We can talk about what’s wrong with Nicki Minaj all day and night but what I see is the one who re-opened the avenue for the female rapper. For way too long they have been screaming at closed doors hoping that someone would hear through a keyhole without success. Determined to be real and stand true to the art of rap they have become so lyrical that some of the guys will call their friends and ask if they heard of them. Through frustration they deliver such detailed and artistic lyrics it’s a matter of time before the guys will be forced to 1. Step they vocabulary up and 2. Make room!

Whether Nicki Minaj’s raps are ghost written or not, we must give her credit and respect her for changing the minds of those who thought female rap was dead!

My music

Well, today I have risen to begin another day in the life of music. I often wait for a song to flow through me before I know what my day will bring, however today, I have a project going on that I'm excited about. This time it feels real. This time it seems right. Most times I make music for my personal spirit, it get me through the day. There are days I wonder what I am supposed to do or if I'm doing the right thing and I can play a few select song s and BOOM, as is well with me.

A lot of today's music only tells you different ways to have sex. Actually it's teaching our children how to have sex, all over the house and blah blah blah. Luckily I'm not alone in believing that music should move your spirit, soul, and feet in some way. Music should set a tone for your day. If you feel good when you wake up, you may want to carry that feeling with you wherever you go......there's a song for that. You may have a day that starts off a little junkie and you want to carry that with you through the day.....there's a song for that.

It's our job to create more music for the world because there are millions of emotions going through billions of people that need healthy music to feed on. As we all know music is a universal language so don't limit yourself to one target audience. Think globally and your music will speak globally!
