The Roots Mural Dedication

Friday, May 31, 2013
11:30 a.m.
World Communications Charter School
512 S. Broad Street (use South Street entrance)

Join Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, and the entire Roots band to celebrate a monumental mural created in their honor. Designed and implemented by Amber Art and Design featuring Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, the mural pays tribute to the world’s most well-known hip hop band and our hometown heroes.

Launched in the Fall of 2011, this multifaceted project included a talkback lecture series, “Roots 101” curriculum for youth in our Art Education Program, and citywide engagement via paint days.
The dedication features food, music, giveaways, and, of course, a special appearance by The Roots.

The Mural Arts Program provides free, year-round art education to over 1,500 youth throughout the city of Philadelphia.

UndergroundMusic.fm Offers Community Outlet For Free Streaming Music With Monetization Options

Undergroundmusicfm-logoUndergroundMusic.fm is a new free streaming music platform for "underground" musicians designed to build community and spread music. Streaming is free but there's also a store aspect and an option to tip for each song. It's a nice idea that is ultimately dependent on who gets involved and whether or not an audience is drawn.
UndergroundMusic.fm is in many ways a simple idea that's hard to pull off. Create a solid, straightforward platform for streaming music, include monetization and community elements and build an outpost for great music via any web-connected device.
UndergroundMusic.fm offers enough music to be browsable, options to connect via Facebook to receive recommendations and a quick to grasp user interface.
In addition to being able to set up a profile and offer streaming music, a store is also under development though not forefronted on the site. You can find out more about submitting your music and about pricing.
There seems to be an unintentional split between the streaming music and the store with a tip jar on streaming tracks and shopping in an entirely separate area. One element that helps bridge that gap is the UndergroundMusic.fm blog.
Overall UndergroundMusic.fm seems well-intentioned but whether or not a thriving community can emerge remains to be seen.
