Are You An Artist?
By definition an artist is someone who creates art, creates art as an occupation or is a person who Is skilled at some activity. There are many reason people set out to be an “artist” but the biggest reason why successful artists shine is because they are creative. A common mistake being made today is mistaking the love of music for talent.
The first definition of being an artist is “One who creates art” Painting a picture that has already been painted is called a copy. We all know that some things can be done better but does that make you an artist? If everyone just paints the same picture in variation, who would spend money on it? Who is going to be excited about the next big thing, which is really the same thing only different?
At some point you may want to go over your work and determine if it’s something new, or is it just the same old songs over and over.

Exclusive: SoundExchange Holding Over $200 Million In Unpaid Artist Royalties... - Digital Music News
According to IRS returns (filed under federal non-profit Form 990), SoundExchange was holding the bag on a 'fund balance' of nearly $260 million by the tail end of 2008. Subsequently, SoundExchange executive Laura Williams told Digital Music News that the figure was closer to $200 million at the beginning of 2009 because of ongoing payouts. The organization could not offer more up-to-date figures, due to 'auditing phase' confidentialities.

What now?
Okay. You have your music. You've written the words and you are ready to share your song with the world. The question is, can you perform? Do you understand what it means to engage the audience? A lot of artists feel they have to start off their performance with a extreme level of energy. Which may be true for up and coming artists, however, can you maintain that level of energy? Often times the audience gets bored because the artist has lost their "umph" mid song. Or the energy level does not match the song. (weak or whack) There are many reasons the audience will begin to text, go get drinks or just look at the artist with that "this is some bullsh**" face.
After a year or so of seeing the same kind of "performances" I began to look at other things to find out what happened to the art of performance. The answer is simple and plain. Artist Development. Or the lack thereof. Many aspiring singer/rappers have no clue what they should be doing when on stage and they definitely have not done any research on how to prepare. Singing the whole song with their eyes closed and/or looking at the ground and ceiling and spending most if not all of the song rapping to their own "hype man" seems to be the norm. What happened to practing, rehearsing....training! The mirror is and always will be a good tool to use to measure your performances. And it's free!!
